Biography
Joseph Jurra Tjapaltjarri, was born in 1952 in the desert region of Western Australia where the Kiwirrkurra community now stands. He began his artistic career in the early 1980s, assisting Charlie Tarawa Tjungurrayi with his paintings, "it was Charlie who taught him how to paint" (Vivien Johnson, 2008). By 1986, he was painting for Papunya Tula Artists and quickly gained recognition through numerous exhibitions in Australia and abroad, with his first international showing in 1989. His paintings are now held in major public collections worldwide, including the Auckland City Gallery in New Zealand, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Chicago. A respected figure within his community, he was elected Chairman of Papunya Tula Artists in 1999 and again in 2000.
