Biography

Angelina Pwerle (b. 1947, Utopia, Northern Territory, Australia) creates her paintings through a meticulous process of applying countless tiny marks to the canvas. Her work often suggests movement in cloud-like formations and is distinguished by the use of a restrained, sometimes singular, palette. Pwerle’s practice is closely tied to the Bush Plum Ahakeye Dreaming stories from her grandfather’s country and the ceremonies connected to them. These Dreamings embody the deep spiritual relationship between her community and the land.

Angelina Pwerle is based in Ngkawenyerre, Utopia, Northern Territory. Her work is represented in major permanent collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (US); the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra (AU); the Aboriginal Art Museum, Utrecht (NL); the National Museum of Art, Osaka (JP); and the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (AU).
