Interest in Indigenous Australian art has surged in recent years, with galleries, collectors, and institutions bringing it to the global spotlight. At Frieze Masters in London, D’Lan Contemporary showcased works by Gija artist Paddy Bedford, selling over $1.3 million worth of art on opening day, and announced the opening of a third gallery in Sydney this November. Actor and avid collector Steve Martin has also played a role in elevating these artists internationally, lending works to major exhibitions, including a 2019 show at Gagosian in New York. Alongside its market success, D’Lan has made ethical commitments, returning 30% of net profits to Indigenous communities, while recent changes to Australia’s export rules are making the trade of these works more accessible worldwide.
